What Makes Katniss Everdeen A Hero

the hunger games

It’s been a few years since Suzanne Collins’ bestselling novel series, The Hunger Games, first hit the big screen starring X-Men: First Class’ Jennifer Lawrence and Journey to the Center of the Earth’s Josh Hutcherson.

But you know what? Katniss Everdeen is still a hero until now – and forever it may seem.

You see, there’s more to this bow-wielding victor than most people think. Because ladies and gentlemen, here are what makes Katniss Everdeen a hero:

Her Love For Her Family

This was especially evident in the first part of The Hunger Games, back when Katniss’ sister Primrose was nominated to be the girl tribute of the 75th Hunger Games with boy tribute Peeta Mellark. Katniss then volunteered to be the next girl tribute in exchange for Prim’s freedom from getting butchered senselessly the current year and her traumatized mother’s survival as she won’t be around to hunt food for the both of them.

Her Respect For Her Father

If you can recall, Katniss loves to be on her feet, hence her highly impressive character towards bows. However, it’s not just survival for her and her family nor a way to communicate with her best friend Gale without anyone judging them. It’s for her to get closer with her father’s memory, who passed away years ago during a coal mine explosion in District 12. It’s also for her to get closer to her father’s legacy, who taught her all that is there to learn about bows and arrows.

Her Loyalty For Peeta Mellark

If you can also recall, Katniss loves to be on her head, hence her highly unimpressive attitude towards people. However, it’s not just strategy for her and her team nor a way to excommunicate with her assigned mentor Haymitch without anyone judging them. It’s for her to get closer with her teammate’s memory, who practically gave her a new reason to wake up every single day. It’s also for her to get closer to her teammate’s legacy, who taught her all that is there to learn about faithfulness and love.

Indeed, it seems like the odds will forever be in Katniss Everdeen’s favor.
